I have had a few days to spend in the peace and quiet of my grandma's backyard to think about some things and one particular thing crossed my mind, and seeing as this is a musical forum type thing, i'd like to ask for a little advice please.
Being the person who likes all things musical, I decided to take the choir course in my school, which was my first mistake. My second mistake was walking into that class last August 23rd. Now in this class im in, nobody cares about it, they don't care for singing. In the other advanced classes, i have heard that they really don't care about choir anymore, even the people who care about music think its a waste of time now, seeing as last year was apparently fun filled and wonderful, and with the help of my friend, we have thought of a few reasons why;
- 1. Most of the people enrolled this year don't take it seriously, and we think that it's impacting the way Ms. Mendel (Teacher) is teaching.
- 2. Since she has been teaching for over 20 years, I think the burning passion she once had for teaching choir to people has long been extinguished.
- 3. When almost 99.9% of people in the classes don't fancy her all the much, I don't think she's going to be motivated to teach us well.
- 4. Shouting and cursing at us for making one small mistake is not the way to teach people in our opinions....
- 5. When even the student teacher is crazy about leaving the classroom...I think that says something.
Guiltily, I have to say I have put my emotions before learning in that class sometimes, but that is not to say that i'm not interested in her class and getting something out of it. In the beginning of the year, the choir class consisted of I think...60 students. Most of them dropped out, leaving about 25-30.
Presently, I am classified as a Soprano 2 voice, but at heart I think I am an Alto. Actually it wasn't so much...'classification', it was more of "CAN YOU SING HIGH?" "..yes?" "GO TO THE RIGHT" "o-ok" "CAN YOU SING LOW?" "s-sure?" "GO TO THE LEFT". I love singing low notes, I like speaking in a low tone, I mean if I could be Jussi Chydenius for a day I WOULD. There's also a bit of self-sacrification here, since the majority of my class is an Alto voice and only about 4 people are Sopranos (Two Soprano 1's, and two Soprano 2's) including me so.
And I mean if you walk in to a place everyday saying 'I don't want to be here', doesn't that say something? When people sing at a volume barely above whispering, when people will do anything not to be in your class doesn't that say something? The songs are alright, but they would be better if people sang...When your voice is louder than everyone elses and you're not even trying that hard it's kind of like...what? But basically to sum up the things I need advice on:
- Does it mean you're a bad choir teacher if 99.9% of your students don't fancy you all that much, won't pay attention to you, won't make an effort to follow your instructions, aren't motivated to sing the songs, and are too busy texting, talking, putting on make-up, or just not singing at all?
- Should I be singing a Soprano 2 voice if it hurts when I hit some of the notes?
- How would you get an uninspired choir class, well, inspired again? How would you inspire an uninspired teacher?
- Would you stay in a class if you didn't get anything from it, even if you tried?
- Is it bad if you run out of air quickly? How can you distribute your air more effectively?
I am rubbish at explaining things, if you need further clarification on something feel free to point it out. I just need a bit of help, I don't know if I should feel this class as a waste of time or as something I should just suck up and deal with, I just don't know.
